Virtual home visitation challenges and strategies

Overview

Presenter will walk participants through the basics of transitioning home visiting care to online. Topics to be discussed include: combating barriers to informed consent, assessing for safety, and promoting privacy and confidentiality. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the nuances of non-verbal communication, trauma-informed approaches, and using moments of dysregulation as opportunities for teaching coping strategies within the context of virtual care.

TRAINING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Develop skills to facilitate a smooth transition to virtual home visits for both provider
    and client.
  2. Develop skills around creating a safe, trauma-informed space for clients to share openly
    during interactions with home visitors to ensure full and accurate assessment.
  3. Increase practitioner understanding of assessing for risk, safety, and how to plan for
    unexpected issues that may arise in virtual home visits.

Denise A. Cervantes ACSW CLE is a home visitor and psychotherapist, who has been working with low-income and high-risk families for over 15 years. Denise is a social worker who earned her Master of Social Work from University of Southern California and her Certificate of Lactation Education from University of California, San Diego. Denise is the Resource and Outreach Supervisor and Home Visitor for the Welcome Baby Pilot Program at Maternal and Child Health Access.
